Breathing New Life into Québec’s Musical Traditions

 

Since 2018, La Déferlance has been bringing fresh energy and a distinctive creative vision to Québec’s traditional music. Drawing on the richness of Québec’s musical heritage, the ensemble reimagines traditional tunes and songs while crafting bold original compositions, enriched by its members’ backgrounds in jazz and classical music.

 

On stage, virtuosity, musical chemistry and infectious energy come together in performances that are both exhilarating and refined, revealing a distinctive and thoroughly contemporary musical identity.

 

Acclaimed by critics in Québec and internationally, La Déferlance has emerged as one of the promising voices in the revival of Québec’s traditional music. The renowned British magazine Songlines praises the inventiveness of the ensemble’s arrangements, placing it at the forefront of this flourishing movement. World Music Central has likewise celebrated the quality of its second album, Âmes des bois (May 2025), while Le Devoir has highlighted the group’s musical daring and instrumental mastery.

 

With an extensive performance history across Canada and growing international experience, including appearances in Mexico and at Scotland’s Celtic Connections festival, La Déferlance has also received multiple nominations for the Canadian Folk Music Awards, GAMIQ Awards, Prix Opus and Prix du patrimoine.

 

At WOMEX 2026, La Déferlance, represented by Agence Résonances, presents Âmes des bois, a live production that invites international presenters and festival programmers to discover the vitality, imagination and artistic daring of an ensemble that brings the authenticity of Québec’s musical traditions into dialogue with the freedom of contemporary creation.
